Track: Operational Efficiency View Track

Lynn R. Witherspoon, M.D., System VP & Chief Medical Information Officer, OCHSNER HEALTH SYSTEM

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 offers incentives (and threatens payment adjustments) for the “meaningful use” of certified electronic health records (EHR).  Successful meaningful use during the first of at least three stages requires providers to meet a number of objectives and report quality metrics.  Most providers discovered that documenting and reporting meaningful use not only involves their adoption of workflows to structure data, but also verification that their EHR configurations and data management accurately represent and inform what’s actually happening.

To meet these complexities and dramatic expansion of reporting demands, we adopted a data governance structure.  This presentation will demonstrate:

How the governance council harmonized reporting demands

Obtained physician involvement and ownership of the associated process and workflow modifications

Linked required infrastructure and software configuration modifications

Assured that structured data was available for analysis and internal and external  reporting, and to inform providers
